Parent Tips for the Evergreen Ball

How Parents Can Get Ready for the Evergreen Ball

With the Evergreen Ball just around the corner on Saturday November 21, tickets are still available and chaperones are needed.  The Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program of Weston (ADAP) encourages parents to take this opportunity to discuss expectations and set limits.  ADAP offers “parenting tools,” especially if this is the first high school dance a student is attending.

ADAP encourages parents to be aware of their child’s plans before and after the dance. Dinner is not provided at the dance, so groups often hold at-home dinner parties or go to restaurants before the dance.  Be watchful of their plans.

Post-dance parties are a concern for many parents.  The Evergreen Ball itself is well supervised and the party atmosphere often continues after the dance.  ADAP encourages parents to be aware of post-parties which may or may not be well supervised. This is an opportunity to discuss reasonable curfews and reach a joint agreement with your child.  Very often, freshman parents do not allow their child to attend post-dance parties during freshman year.

If students do attend a party, make it easy to leave if they sense trouble.  Encourage them to call for a ride – no matter how late, no questions asked.  Develop a code word that means, “pick me up now” to avoid being embarrassed in front of friends.

Most importantly, be clear.  Tell your kids that you feel alcohol and drug use is unacceptable.  Many parents never state this simple fact.  It makes a difference.

This is an excellent opportunity to network with other parents about setting limits and rules for the evening.

The Evergreen Ball will be held on Saturday, November 21, from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm at Temple Israel in Westport.  No one will be admitted after 9:00 pm and no one may leave before 10:30 pm unless arranged in advance.  A Breathalyzer test will be given to everyone entering the dance.
